In this class you will explore intermediate forms and techniques, and walk away with even more confidence in your ability to make functional wheel-thrown pots. Lily will share her methods of finishing each piece, including trimming your pots on and off the wheel, incorporating elements of handbuilding to thrown pieces, and focusing on how to make comfortable rims and handles that are pleasing to use and to look at. Some of the projects covered include lidded vessels, different forms of dinnerware, and the quintessential mug and tumbler. Our focus will be on building your skills in pulling even walls, centering and throwing larger, and paying attention to the little details that make a successful pot. Lily will also share her techniques for throwing with coils, throwing off the hump, and darting the clay to alter its form. Instructed by Lily. This is an intensive and extremely fun throwing focused class. It covers skill building, style, technique, clay choices and tools. It will train students using wheel throwing techniques for making cylinders and bowls. Group and personal demonstrations will be made throughout the entire process of making a piece. Utilizing safe studio practices for ceramic materials will be covered as well. Short casual critiques / Q&A sessions will give opportunities to ask questions and get suggestions / feedback. This is a good class for those have not touched the wheel for a while and want to refresh their knowledge. Students will learn about the stages of clay by: Using the pottery wheel with wet clay to create an object.- Drying it to the right consistency to trimming.

In this hands-on demonstration, Samuel Newman of Suay Ceramics will discuss techniques and strategies to elevate your ceramic mug designs with balanced and thoughtfully crafted handles. During this 6 hour workshop, we will analyze the mug form through the lens of handle placement and fit, demonstrate various handle making techniques on three distinct mug designs, and practice these techniques on your own handcrafted mugs! Those with less than 2 years of ceramics experience must take 3 classes at Cascade to become a member. Those with 2 or more years of ceramics experience must still take one class with us before becoming a member. This is to make sure you have a good understanding of the studio, have a chance to get to know the instructors and some class friends, and get some experience using our glazes before being on your own with them. Minimum age for membership is 18. If you meet these requirements, email us at info@cascadeceramics.com to join the waitlist for studio membership! Memberships are available for ceramic artists with some experience to work independently in the studio on our equipment. Membership grants 24/7 Monthly Studio access by key fob to work at your desired convenience. We don't require scheduled "in-studio" time since we have 12 member designated wheels that are never full. You are provided your own 18 x 48 shelf to use. Memberships are automatically charged on your card each month until you cancel in the system and notify us two weeks in advance if you wish to stop. Glazing and firings are included. We take care of the firings on a continual basis. Items are loaded as soon as they are ready to be fired. We fire at cone 6. You may purchase Georgie's clay in the studio. If you bring in outside clay or glazes, please check with us that it fits our firing parameters before using it. We provide a nice variety of Georgie's and Amaco glazes and underglazes to use on your pieces. We have two large worktables with many handbuilding tools and banding wheels as well as many other community tools available for use in the studio. We have a Northstar slab roller, a large hardy-board wedging table and so on. We provide WIFI and take turns picking the music station. In this class we will focus on making pots for an atmospheric kiln firing. Dwayne will help you to improve your throwing technique by demonstrating as well as one on one attention. Students are welcome to make whatever they please with the support of Dwayne. This is an intermediate class and welcomes a range of experience levels. We will work to grow our skills together and enjoy the potters wheel for what a wonderful to it is. The class will culminate in a soda firing at the clay compound and students will get to learn about the gas soda firing process. Loading kiln and Firing on June 28th & 29th. Already have basic handbuilding skills and ready to learn something new? Handbuilding 2 is the class for you! This class is for those who have some experience handbuilding and want to create more complex projects, and gain technical skills. Projects will explore several sculptural techniques to create a tile image and a small bust. Students will also be guided in using the slab roller and extruder to make slabs and coils for creating functional items such as pouring vessels, vases, and lidded jars. More advanced glazing and surface design techniques will be offered, such as under glazing, water etching, and wax resist patterning with glazes.

This is the perfect class for anyone interested in trying pottery for the first time, for those who have had some clay experience and want a refresher on making things and glazing, those who are looking to looking to improve on their skills before taking a more advanced class, or someone looking for a new hobby, so basically a great class for everyone! Students will learn basic techniques such as pinch pots, slab built forms, and coil pots all formed with just your hands and some simple tools. As you create projects, your instructor will teach about the different stages of clay and how to use it at each stage to your advantage. Your instructor Max will first demonstrate the process of making a cylinder or bowl and then give you individual feedback as you make your own. In this 2 hour class, participants will go through the process of making one pot together with the group, and a second one at their own pace. Once finished, the class will clean up together. Demo takes about 20 minutes, making your first pot can take up to 45 minutes. Many people will have time to make a second pot, but not always. The second pot usually is a little quicker to make. Cleanup and choosing a glaze will take up the last 15 – 25 minutes. Your new pottery will be bisque fired in the kiln once dry and then glaze fired with one of 6 glazes you will have to choose from. Glazed pots will be ready to pick up 3 - 4 weeks after the workshop. We recommend that you wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty, although the clay does wash out of clothes easily. In this one day workshop, students will learn to use slabs to creat vases in a variety of forms, like flower “bricks” with slots for single stems, wall-hanging vases and more! Lily will talk about the basics of constructing with slabs, as well as show you techniques to alter the clay with darting and templates to get the forms you want.
Students can choose from a selection of our studio glazes, and Lily will glaze your piece for you to pick up.
Bring your ideas, or just come for a day of creative play. All skill levels are welcome!
