Membership requirements: Monthly membership is available for ceramic artists with enough pottery experience to work independently in the studio on our equipment. Members must be knowledgable about the ceramic process and preventing creating clay dust. Membership if for hobby potters, we are not able to accommodate production potters. Those with less than 2 years of ceramics experience must take 3 classes at Cascade to become a member. Those with 2 or more years of ceramics experience must still take one class with us before becoming a member. Some exceptions for advanced level potters with recent cone 6 experience may be made. This is to make sure you have a good understanding of the studio, have a chance to get to know the instructors and some class friends, and get some experience using our glazes before being on your own with them. Minimum age for membership is 18. All members must agree to our studio code of conduct & terms of service upon signing up for membership. Monthly membership is automatically charged on your card each month starting on the day you purchase the membership, you may log into your account and choose to cancel it if you wish to stop. Studio description: Cascade Ceramics has a friendly and collaborative atmosphere. Membership grants 24/7 Monthly Studio access by key fob to work at your desired convenience. We don't require scheduled "in-studio" time since we have 12 member designated wheels and lots of space to work in. We provide a 18 x 48 shelf for each member to store their projects, tools, clay, etc. Glazing and firings are included. We take care of the firings on a continual basis. Items are loaded as soon as they are dry and based on the size of work where it will fit in the kiln. We fire at cone 6. You may purchase Georgie's clay in the studio. If you bring in outside clay or glazes, please check with us that it fits our firing parameters(midrange cone 6) before using it. We provide a nice variety of house made glazes and some commercial underglazes to use on your pieces. There are two large worktables & a smaller work table with many handbuilding tools and banding wheels as well as many other community tools available for use in the studio. This class will focus on improving throwing technique, wheel wedging clay, throwing off the hump, pulling handles off the pot, tap centering, and the Hungarian claw. Students should be able to center and pull a cylinder without instruction, and Dwayne will meet students where their skills are at. Class will include a demonstration then work time where Dwayne will offer personalized feedback on your projects and technique. 3 objectives 1. Improve throwing skills 2. Learn something new 3. Enjoy the process Techniques we will cover. The Hungarian claw. This technique allows you to get clay centered and up high in fewer pulls. It also helps with collaring vases and bottle forms. Pulling handles. Students will learn how to pull handles off of the pot, a very efficient way to make handles for pots which with practice can be quite fun. Tap centering. Tap centering helps quite a bit when trimming because it allows you to center quickly and effortlessly and therefore makes trimming much more joyful. Wheel wedging. Cone your clay to eliminate air bubbles and align clay particles before throwing your pot. This makes for a smoother ride once you begin pulling your walls. Make your own fairy house with Lily! On the first day of this workshop, September 14th, students will be provided clay to create small to medium slab built fairy houses. These can hold tea lights, cover things in the yard/garden or just be a decorative piece. You’ll be shown multiple ways to decorate your houses, with clay additions such as sprig molds, coils, and carving and may customize your fairy house however you want. Students will return on Sept 28th to paint the fairy houses with glaze. Lily will first demonstrate glazing styles and techniques, then instruct as you glaze your fairy house. Finished pieces will be ready about 1-2 weeks later. All materials provided & beginner friendly. Minimum age 16 please.

This class will explore intermediate forms and techniques, and walk away with even more confidence in your ability to make functional wheel-thrown pots. Lily will share her methods of finishing each piece, including trimming your pots on and off the wheel, incorporating elements of handbuilding to thrown pieces, and focusing on how to make comfortable rims and handles that are pleasing to use and to look at. Some of the projects covered include lidded vessels, different forms of dinnerware, and the quintessential mug and tumbler. Our focus will be on building your skills in pulling even walls, centering and throwing larger, and paying attention to the little details that make a successful pot. Intermediate wheel skills will be taught, and then taken further to alter pots that have been thrown on the wheel. Students will be guided in the best ways to make their pots functional and joyful to use, while gaining new skills in both throwing, hand-building and having lots of fun along the way! Students will explore altering their pot’s profile with darting, and various ways of altering the lip of a pot such as rolled and split rims. The class will culminate with glazing the work, and learning to use surface techniques such as water etching and washes to create depth and a more beautifully decorated pot! Lily will meet students where their skills are at, sudents should be intermediate enough to able to make a cylinder on the wheel without instruction.
