This is an intensive and extremely fun throwing focused class. It covers skill building, style, technique, clay choices and tools. It will train students using wheel throwing techniques for making cylinders and bowls. Group and personal demonstrations will be made throughout the entire process of making a piece. Utilizing safe studio practices for ceramic materials will be covered as well. Short casual critiques / Q&A sessions will give opportunities to ask questions and get suggestions / feedback. This is a good class for those who are total beginners with pottery or those who have not touched the wheel for a while and want to refresh their knowledge. Students will learn about the stages of clay by: Using the pottery wheel with wet clay to create an object.- Drying it to the right consistency to trimming.
- Trimming the outside, adding a foot or handle or doing other alterations.

Ready to try making something other than round pottery with the wheel? Dive into using the wheel as a tool to create a variety of shapes that are not round in this intermediate wheel class instructed by our resident artist, Lily. Students will be guided in the best ways to make their pots functional and joyful to use, while gaining new skills in both throwing, hand-building and having lots of fun along the way! In this class you will explore intermediate forms and techniques, and walk away with even more confidence in your ability to make functional wheel-thrown pots. Lily will share her methods of finishing each piece, including trimming your pots on and off the wheel, incorporating elements of handbuilding to thrown pieces, and focusing on how to make comfortable rims and handles that are pleasing to use and to look at. Some of the projects covered include lidded vessels, different forms of dinnerware, and the quintessential mug and tumbler. Make your own fairy house with Lily! On the first day of this workshop, July 28th, students will be provided clay to create small to medium slab built fairy houses. These can hold tea lights, cover things in the yard/garden or just be a decorative piece. You’ll be shown multiple ways to decorate your houses, with clay additions such as sprig molds, coils, and carving and may customize your fairy house however you want. Students will return on Aug 11th to paint the fairy houses with glaze. Lily will first demonstrate glazing styles and techniques, then instruct as you glaze your fairy house. Those with less than 2 years of ceramics experience must take 3 classes at Cascade to become a member. Those with 2 or more years of ceramics experience must still take one class with us before becoming a member. This is to make sure you have a good understanding of the studio, have a chance to get to know the instructors and some class friends, and get some experience using our glazes before being on your own with them. Minimum age for membership is 18. If you meet these requirements, email us at info@cascadeceramics.com to join the waitlist for studio membership! Memberships are available for ceramic artists with some experience to work independently in the studio on our equipment. Membership grants 24/7 Monthly Studio access by key fob to work at your desired convenience. We don't require scheduled "in-studio" time since we have 12 member designated wheels that are never full. You are provided your own 18 x 48 shelf to use. Memberships are automatically charged on your card each month until you cancel in the system and notify us two weeks in advance if you wish to stop. Glazing and firings are included. We take care of the firings on a continual basis. Items are loaded as soon as they are ready to be fired. We fire at cone 6. You may purchase Georgie's clay in the studio. If you bring in outside clay or glazes, please check with us that it fits our firing parameters before using it. We provide a nice variety of Georgie's and Amaco glazes and underglazes to use on your pieces. We have two large worktables with many handbuilding tools and banding wheels as well as many other community tools available for use in the studio. We have a Northstar slab roller, a large hardy-board wedging table and so on. We provide WIFI and take turns picking the music station.
