This class will explore intermediate forms and techniques, and walk away with even more confidence in your ability to make functional wheel-thrown pots. Lily will share her methods of finishing each piece, including trimming your pots on and off the wheel, incorporating elements of handbuilding to thrown pieces, and focusing on how to make comfortable rims and handles that are pleasing to use and to look at. Some of the projects covered include lidded vessels, different forms of dinnerware, and the quintessential mug and tumbler. Our focus will be on building your skills in pulling even walls, centering and throwing larger, and paying attention to the little details that make a successful pot. Lily will also share her techniques for throwing with coils, throwing off the hump, and darting the clay to alter its form. Instructed by Lily. Intermediate wheel skills will be taught, and then taken further to alter pots that have been thrown on the wheel. Students will be guided in the best ways to make their pots functional and joyful to use, while gaining new skills in both throwing, hand-building and having lots of fun along the way! Students will explore altering their pot’s profile with darting, and various ways of altering the lip of a pot such as rolled and split rims. The class will culminate with glazing the work, and learning to use surface techniques such as water etching and washes to create depth and a more beautifully decorated pot! This class will focus on building a foundation of skills for using the pottery wheel to make cylinders and bowls. This is a good class for those who are total beginners with pottery or those who have not touched the wheel for a while and want to refresh their knowledge, or those who are working on learning to throw a cylinder consistently. Students will learn about the stages of clay by using the pottery wheel to form pottery with wet clay, dry it to the right consistency to trim a foot, finish drying the pottery for its first firing, and glaze their work. Many people choose to repeat beginning wheel more than once or twice, until they can center clay and make cylinders without instruction before moving on to an intermediate wheel class.
